Society of Genealogists Presentation Series: Mother Nature’s Impact on Our Ancestors

Mother Nature is a fickle mistress, and it often takes all the ingenuity, strength and moral fibre of individuals to last through and thrive under her changing demands. Fluctuating conditions in the natural environment have always had immediate and very significant influence on the success or failure of food-producing endeavours and income. Changes to the physical habitats of families were often underlying factors in decisions to find jobs, improve living conditions or to move.

In a series of presentations offered by the Society of Genealogists from January through December 2027, I will present a series of talks about the many ways in which people and communities were affected by Mother Nature, that is events associated with natural phenomena.

Emphasis will be placed on how family historians might recognize the events and incorporate the information into their own family histories.

Talks will be scheduled on the second Wednesday of each month. The first six subjects will deal with natural phenomena and present many examples of events that impacted people and communities throughout history. The last four will deal with societal consequences of natural events, particularly during the Little Ice Age.

A final presentation in November, Bringing It All Together, will summarize the major aspects of all the information presented. IN December we will organize an Open House when participants will be invited to comment on the series, ask questions, compare notes and discuss examples of natural events that impacted their own families.

Information about the series and individual talks can be found on the society’s website: Mother Nature’s Impact on Our Ancestors: a 2027 presentation series with Wayne Shepheard - Society of Genealogists

You can watch a summary video of the series and learn how to register for the sessions here: Mother Nature’s Impact on Our Ancestors series - Society of Genealogists.

Join us for what we believe will be informative sessions about Mother Nature’s role in the lives of our ancestors.
